Thanks to Sir Consiglieri for that one. Man… I’m really turning into a Lord of the Rings freak… not that I wasn’t turning into one before… it just seems like the pace has accelerated a bit. Did you know that every place, person, and item in Tolkien’s world has a history, background, and meaning? (Spoiler warning… kinda, but not really.) For example, our friend Gandalf the Grey up there isn’t just Gandalf the wizard. He’s from an order of the Maiar called the Istari, roughly translated as “wizard.” Now the Maiar are a lesser offshoot of a race called the Ainur, which are a race of immortal spirits in Arda (the world that LOTR takes place in. Middle Earth is a region of Arda). The other and greater offshoot of the Ainur are the Valar. Now… the Ainur were created by Illuvatar, the creator of everything in Tolkien’s universe. With the Ainur’s help, Illuvatar created Arda and it’s races. So… our friend Gandalf isn’t just another wizard. He’s a physical manifestation of a spirit that existed before time began. Think of it as an angel coming down to Earth. Well, that’s it for our Tolkien corner today kids. Back to the real world… woohoo…
